A noun is a word used to name a person, place, thing,
quality or idea. Nouns are the most common among all the parts of speech. Here
are some examples of nouns:
Person: Robert,
Abraham Lincoln, coach, pastor
Place: Washington
D.C., study room, park, baseball field
Thing: pen,
car, horse, statue, dolphin, movie
Quality: length,
beauty, character
Idea: freedom,
religion, party
There are many different classifications of nouns. In fact,
grammarians have developed a whole series of them:
- Subject and object nouns
- Singular and plural nouns
- Countable and uncountable nouns
- Proper and common nouns
- Abstract and concrete nouns
There are also some special types of nouns:
- Nouns as adjectives
- Possessive nouns
- Compound nouns
- Collective nouns
